Spare tire bike rack for Jeep Wrangler
There are a ton of excellent bike racks out there, but I’ve narrowed these down to a shortlist of the ones I believe are the best. Let’s go through these now.
This is an excellent rack from Hollywood Racks. Take a look at the Amazon photos and you’ll see that it makes use of both the spare tire and tire fixings.
The rack fits on to the spare tire mounting bolts with a hand-tightening knob to secure it. The frame then sits snugly up against the spare tire which keeps it firm and stops any wobbling when the rack is fully loaded.
It can carry one or two bikes securely and fitting is very easy – just hook the bike crossbar over the top arms of the rack and secure in place with the rubber straps. For extra peace-of-mind, I always add a ratchet strap over bikes and rack to lock everything in place. Bear in mind that for bikes without a top tube (such as ladies bikes and some kids bikes) you will need to use a top tube adaptor to fit them onto hanging bike racks like these. Another rack from Hollywood Racks. This one has a different fitting to the spare tire. Instead of bolting on to the tire fixings, this has a bar and straps that wrap over and fix to the tire itself. Both methods of fixing are very secure and it really comes down to personal preference as to which you want to go with.
On the other side of the rack (i.e. the bike side), it’s business-as-usual. There’s space for one or two bikes and these are hooked over the top bar and secured with the straps. For both of the Hollywood racks, the frames can carry bikes of up to 35 lbs or 15 kg each (70 lbs / 30 kg in total for both bikes). As this rack is also a ‘hook over’ type then kids or ladies bikes without a top tube will also need an adaptor.

If you have a tow bar fitted then it opens up more possibilities for bike carrying on your Wrangler.
Allen Sports do a great hitch rack to fit onto tow bars and this one can take up to four bikes. Having struggled for ages with a family of four and a bike rack for three I know the pain of trying to fit the remaining bike somewhere in the car before setting off….
The rack locks on to the hitch and comes with two keys (because, if you’re like me, you’ll put one key in a ‘safe place’ and then forget where that is). It fits round the spare tire and can lay flat to allow access to the tailgate. Bikes hook over the top arms and have the rubber straps to secure them in position for travel.
Reading through the positive reviews on Amazon (of which there are thousands), the phrases that tend to jump out are “easy to assemble”, “easy to install”, “easy to use”.
